Section 8, System Configuration - MCI coaches with DDC S60/EGR discusses the change to the air system on MCI coaches equipped with S60/EGR engines. That tip coincides with Service Bulletin #2878* which further explains the change to the coach air system.
A second change has taken place on the D model coaches equipped with Detroit Diesel S60/EGR engines. Effective with unit 56298, the air intake plumbing for the compressor has been changed. Originally, intake air to the compressor was supplied through a separate air filter. At the above unit cut-in, the intake air line is now routed to the engine air cleaner. See Figure 1.
The blue hose attached to the top of the compressor is the updated air intake. This hose is 147" long, so it is routed along the side of the engine before it is attached to the air cleaner. See Figure 2.
After routing along the length of the engine, it curves back to the crankshaft pulley end of the engine, where it crosses over and attaches to the engine air intake pipe between the air cleaner and the turbocharger. See Figure 3.
The length of the intake hose aids in air flow into the compressor, the same as headers on a racing engine aid in exhaust gas air flow.
