H & L CHARTER STARTS 2017 RIGHT WINNING GOMOTORCOACH AUCTION BID ON A NEW MCI® J4500
DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, APRIL 3, 2017: (TSX:NFI) (TSX:NFI.DB.U) Motor Coach Industries ("MCI"), a subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc. (the "Company"), the largest bus and motor coach manufacturer in North America, salutes California's H & L Charter for kicking off a winning 2017. Known for safety, innovative practices and an environmentally friendly outlook on all aspects of its business, H & L Charter, based in Rancho Cucamonga, California, had the winning bid on a brand new, luxury MCI J4500 during the annual GoMotorcoach auction at UMA Expo in St Louis. The auction benefits the Motorcoach Marketing Council with proceeds supporting the image and future of motorcoach travel in North America via Council's GoMotorcoach campaign available to operators. H & L Charter also won the 2017 ABA Green Spirit Award from the American Bus Association's Annual Meeting & Marketplace in Cleveland in the small operator category.
"We're a third-generation company with a bright future, and proud of recent achievements," said H & L President Jodi Merritt, part of a women-owned and family-owned business that includes her mother, Elaine Fickett. "Our customers demand clean, environmentally sound transportation and we're very excited and proud to add MCI's greenest "J" to our fleet."
This year the 2017 MCI J4500 unveils the latest generation of EPA 2017 clean-diesel Cummins ISX12 engine technology.
H & L Charter took delivery of its new MCI J4500 on March 15, which brings the company's 45- and 40-foot coach fleet to 14. The coach's features include a Tarabus wood-like floor along with the new standard enhanced Amaya GT seats that have a thinner back for more per-passenger cabin space. "It's amazing how an inch or two for your knees really matters," said Merritt. "Our customers are going to love the comfort and the extra leg room."
The new coach will mainly be used for their 15-day tours — mostly through California, Arizona and Utah and up and down the western United States. "That's about 30 percent of our work," said Merritt.
Multi-generational family companies like H & L are the backbone of the motorcoach industry, but 30-employee H & L is unique. It's not only owned and run by women, but half of its drivers are female too.
"In the charter industry, your drivers are the ambassadors of your business. Staff works very hard, but the person your customers see is their driver," Merritt explains. "Their job is to keep your customers safe and happy, and that's not always easy. So we're very proud to have both male and female drivers who are not only well-trained but exceptional at dealing with people. They're expert drivers and problem-solvers on a personal level, and that's very tough to find."
Driver recruitment and training supports H & L's enviable reputation as a green transportation company. Chosen by its peers for the Green Spirit Award, H & L has invested in driver education programs that limit idling and encourage good driving practices as certified by eRating, a program of the Certification for Sustainable Transportation at the University of Vermont.
And if it's a product that can be recycled, H & L does it religiously in its office, service bays and on every single coach. The company is always adding to a recyclables list that includes oil, tires, cans, bottles, paper, fluorescent tubes, batteries, e-components and printer ink. Says Merritt, who began her first job at H & L cleaning out her grandparents' buses at the age of eight, "Every item you can add to that list not only makes transportation greener, but it makes your company more efficient."
