TOUGH WINTERS, TOUGH COACHES: LAMERS PURCHASES THREE NEW MCI® J4500 COACHES,
AND THREE MORE TO COME IN '17
DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, OCTOBER 26, 2016: (TSX:NFI) (TSX:NFI.DB.U) As the nation's 17th largest motor coach company with top ratings in safety and luxury, Lamers knows where to go for quality coaches that fit its varied routes and need for superior support on-road and off.
That's why the Green Bay, Wisconsin-based carrier has added three new MCI J4500 coaches with another three on the way. And MCI couldn't be happier.
Lamers has one of the unique stories in the coach industry — a business model and reputation that's so well-known outside Wisconsin that they're often cold-called for school bus business and other services on a regular basis. "It's an honor to serve Lamers and MCI has been doing it since 1974," said Patricia Ziska, MCI Vice President of New Coach Sales.
Allen Lamers, President, puts it this way: "MCI has done a nice job with passenger comfort and we especially like how they honed in on corrosion control," referring to features inside and outside the coach. Northern Wisconsin winters can be brutal and the MCI J4500 is built with thick, corrosion-resistant stainless structural tubing, the hallmark of MCI durability. Each vehicle also carries durable, chip-resistant RIM (resin injection molded) bumpers and more robust, replaceable bumper outers.
"We have a terminal that uses sand to clear ice and snow, but other areas use the liquid stuff and that's just bad. We wanted certain things and were able to get them with MCI." Don't get Lamers wrong — he's also a fan of what's inside his vehicles, particularly when it comes to superior engineering, passenger amenities and all-important legroom.
Standard features on Lamers' new MCI J4500 coaches include electronic stability program, a ZF independent suspension; and smooth-stopping Bendix ADB22X brakes and best-in-class parcel rack capacity. Lamers added chrome mirrors, the optional Wingman advanced collision mitigation system, stylishly sleek Kiel seating for 56 passengers, and an REI enhanced A/V system with HD monitors, and 110-volt power outlets with USB port at every seat and Wi-Fi.
Lamers knows something about MCI innovation. Its first MCI purchase was one of the first coaches in the industry to come with an A/C system. It's purchased hundreds more MCI models through the decades. Lamers last took four MCI J4500 coaches in 2011. "MCI builds a solid coach you can depend on," said Lamers. "I like our MCI team and the relationship we've established over the years."
With 39 locations throughout Wisconsin, with one in Florida and two in Michigan, and fleet of 120 motor coaches, Lamers is the only member of the Motorcoach Top 50 based in the Badger State. Lamers offers intercity connections throughout the state and excursions and escorted tours throughout the continental U.S., Canada and the world. Lamers is a member of the industry's prestigious International Motor Coach Group, Inc., (IMG), holds the highest ratings from the U.S. departments of Defense and Transportation, and is an approved carrier with the Transportation Safety Exchange.
The company was founded in 1944 by Lyle and Ellen Lamers with a single red, white and blue bus used to transport children to school. Today, Allen Lamers and his brother Kevin run the company with their children. The next generation is getting involved too — over the summer, the founders' great-grandchildren were at work installing video and two-way radio systems in more than 100 buses.
"They did a great job. The bosses said they got it done in a hurry," said Allen Lamers. "It's important to get kids to work early and take pride in what they do — those are the values our parents had, and that's how we hope to bring this company into the fourth generation."
