James Madison University adds J4500 to colorful fleet

It's a good bet that when James Madison University opened its doors 99 years ago, its students traveled aboard vehicles significantly less fancy than its newest acquisition: an MCI® J4500, decorated with a colorful, bumper-to-bumper depiction of the school, its students and even its purple-crowned bulldog mascot.

Then again, the school has been on a winning streak. The Harrisonburg, Virginia, public college won its first national NCAA championship in I-AA football in 2004; in 2006, it acquired an MCI® D4005 to give small athletic squads a classy ride. And this spring, it bought the J4500 to take its big teams out in style.

"We have J4500s, an E4500 and a D in the MCI line," says Carl Puffenbarger, assistant director of facilities at James Madison. "We've developed a nice working relationship with MCI, and ever since we bought our first E, we've fallen in love with the style and the ride of these coaches."  The university has a 20-vehicle fleet to serve students and staff, ranging from cars to full-size coaches, and Puffenbarger says they're looking to replace their older passenger cutaway vans "with something similar to the D series" in the future.

James Madison University got its start as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg — it went co-ed in the 1960s. Today it supports more than 15,000 graduate and undergraduate students, with 500 of them on the school's athletic teams.

The school's website is www.jmu.edu.
