Perhaps you've noticed some improvements in the way MCI is shipping parts — among them, you can now submit an order as late as 3 p.m. (instead of noon) and get your parts shipped out the same day via free ground service, and if you want your parts shipped to you the same day by air, you can order as late as 10:30 p.m. The difference is, MCI is now shipping parts itself from its Louisville distribution center, rather than relying on a third-party logistics company. MCI made the change January 1 after MCI's seven-year contract with it's former logistics company ran out. Already, customer satisfaction is up, and shipping accuracy is up to 99.79 percent. and all ground and air deliveries have been shipped on time. "We're offering better service at less cost," says Derrick Anderson, director of operations and transportation. "Doing it ourselves allows us the agility to make changes in a very quick fashion as new processes develop and to raise the bar further to offer more and more options to customers." Anderson says that handling shipping in-house also allows MCI to be more responsive to customers' special requests, such as handling certain assembly tasks or working extended hours to make a crucial shipment. The changeover was relatively seamless: MCI brought over many of the same shipping associates that were doing the work under the third-party logistics company. "It was a big decision," says Anderson. "I'm very pleased with the result. We're offering service that none of our major competitors offers, and it gives us another advantage in the marketplace."
