FYI from MCI™

New safety technologies to be standard

Always on the forefront of industry technology, MCI is the first coach manufacturer in North America to add three new safety innovations as standard features on its coach models: a tire pressure monitoring system, a fire suppression system, and in-bumper back-up sensors (on E 4500 and J4500 coaches).

"At MCI, we're sensitive to the challenges and issues facing our customers," said Bryan Couch, director of product development. "Adding the technologies as standard features enhances safety while helping to lower operational costs."

Tire monitoring

The SmarTire™ system monitors tire pressure and temperature and gives the driver early warning of tire-related problems from the driver's control panel. The red and yellow LED display indicates if the tire pressure falls below the established setting or if the air temperature in the tire rises above the established setting while the coach is in motion. A small, wireless sensor is mounted on each wheel and collects temperature and pressure data. This data is transmitted to the receiver and is output on the display unit. "SmarTire not only serves as an asset protection device, it simplifies a pre-trip inspections and should make it easier to prevent unscheduled downtime, help to improve tire wear and fuel efficiency," said Couch. As an option, MCI offers a full functional SmarTire display, which notes the pressure and temperature of each individual tire to readily identify any tire that is a problem. The full functional display SmarTire system will soon be available as an aftermarket retrofit kit through MCI Fleet Support.

Industry reports note that tires and tire maintenance are the second largest expense after fuel in operating a commercial vehicle. Under-inflated tires reduce tread- and tire-life and are the leading cause of tire failure. Maintaining correct tire pressure is a critical factor for safety and efficient vehicle operation.

Back-up bumper sensors

MCI's back-up sensor detects obstacles when backing up. Status is monitored through the control panel and communicated to the driver by LED indicators and audible alarm warning. "This feature creates a much safer situation," said Couch. "We're very pleased to be the first coach manufacturer in North America to offer it as a standard feature."

Fire suppression

The Amerex Fire Suppression system is designed to warn the driver and suppress fire in its earliest stages, protecting both passengers and the coach. In the event of fire, a suppression agent is delivered directly to hazard areas. Amerex is one of the leading manufacturers of fire-fighting equipment. MCI recommends that operators check with their insurers to determine if this system qualifies for lower premiums.

Since being the first to build a stainless steel-framed coach, MCI has been pioneering new technologies that not only offer greater passenger and vehicle protection, but operational efficiencies as well. Most recently, MCI was the first to offer a plug-and-play multiplex system for simplified diagnostics as well as the first to offer the Cat ACERT engine and ZF Astronic transmission as powertrain options.

Another relatively recent innovation is MCI Emergency Roadside Assistance, managed in-house from the company's Louisville technical support center. MCI coach operators experiencing trouble on the road can call MCI toll-free at 800-241-2947 to talk directly to a Fleet Support technical support representative who will help diagnose and monitor the problem; coordinate service and parts; and help arrange towing and hotels if necessary.

"Technology is the driving force behind many of these standard features now available," said Couch, "And operators can continue to expect MCI to lead they way."
