Remanufactured parts save money, natural resources

Big-ticket parts can take a big bite out of your wallet, but there is a solution. MCI's line of remanufactured parts can help you manage costs, with the added benefit of offering an environmentally friendly way of disposing of your old parts.

Dan Lohse, MCI product line manager for remanufactured parts, estimates that remanufactured parts can save an operator 25 to 35 percent — and sometimes even more — compared to new parts, and the warranties tend to be as good or better. MCI also has high standards for its remanufactured parts, using OEM vendors and those that can improve on OEM quality. The product line offers everything from engines to compressors and other air-system equipment, fan clutches, electric motors and other larger parts and includes many products sold under MCI's CoachGuard® brand.

For operators who have never ordered remanufactured parts, the process is simple:

  1. You order the remanufactured part you want from the MCI catalog. The price of the remanufactured part includest a "core" charge for the used part you will be sending back. Some core parts are subject to minimum quality criteria, and all must be returned clean and drained of all fluids.
  2. MCI sends the ordered part followed by a return goods authorization (RGA) and a UPS call slip (or a different carrier number for parts heavier than 125 pounds). Operators can usually simply box up the old part in the new-part box and call for a pickup. For most parts (engines and transmissions are an exception), MCI pays the freight both ways.
  3. Once you send the old "core" part to MCI in the proper condition, MCI issues a parts credit for you to use on anything in the MCI parts catalog.

The MCI difference

While many distributors offer remanufactured parts, Lohse believes that few are as committed as MCI to delivering total satisfaction. MCI also cultivates strong relationships with its vendors, which can be invaluable should an issue arise.

"For green-conscious operators, this program is very good for the environment," says Lohse. "It saves a lot of materials and resources."
