Periodic Inspection Of Wheel Mounting

The mounting and attachment of the wheel to the axle wheel end assembly is an important maintenance concern. The following periodic checks should be undertaken to maintain the best wheel and tire performance.

  1. Check that wheel stud nuts are tightened to the proper torque specifications as shown at the end of this tip.

NOTE: Wheel stud nuts should be re-tightened every 100 miles (161 km) for the first 500 miles (805 km). This should be performed on new vehicles and whenever new wheels have been installed. If you encounter a broken wheel stud, replace one stud to the left and one stud to the right of the broken stud.

  2. Inspect all wheels for cracks, bent bead rims or other damage.

NOTE: A worn hub face could be caused by running wheels too loose. If the wear is not too excessive, the entire hub face can be machined flat. A badly worn hub should be replaced. Any broken or cracked hubs should be replaced.
